Processing of relationship visas goes beyond 2 years!
After improving 820/309 Visa processing in 2020-2021 and reducing the visa backlog, the ‘bad old days’ have returned in 2023-2024. Data now shows a significant increase in the backlog of Partner Visas due to a decline in visa grants. Grants have fallen below 40000 per year from the 70000 plus in 2020-21. At the same time, applications have increased to over 60000 in the 2023-24 Migration Year. Why the Department now cannot process 70000 applications in a year is unexplained.
Now, while legal experts note that the Minister and Department have no defence for failing to process the relationship visas. The Partner visa program, unlike other visas, does not have a cap and nor can one be applied. If and how the Department will actually address the underlying issues is unknown.
The outcome for applicants is all very negative. Applicants will now face at least a 2 year wait-out period before receiving a decision on their application.
